Real Estate Development & Management Company

The Gatto Development Corporation (GDC) was formed in the late 1970s and is based in Southbury, Connecticut. This family owned real estate development company consists of several entities that acquire, develop, build, own, and manage commercial real estate, primarily in Connecticut. The company owns a small portfolio of quality commercial assets, which range in type from Class A to Class B multi-tenanted office and medical office buildings, to retail and mixed use properties.

Over the years, GDC has built a stable and dynamic business that has earned a strong reputation in the real estate community. The cornerstone of the company’s business philosophy is its common sense approach to problem solving, along with hard work and a commitment to making quality buildings.

Goals & Objectives

Using the traditional fundamentals of strong demographics and location, GDC continues to seek quality properties and assets in markets that are site constrained, where value is added through redevelopment and market repositioning. GDC continues to utilize a focused and prudent approach to site selection, design, and construction management. To ensure long-term success, investment properties are managed by a talented and energetic management team that possess a comprehensive knowledge of real estate management and utilize an intensive "hands-on" approach to solving day-to-day issues.

Company Founder

S. Rudy Gatto
1936-2014

S. Rudy Gatto, founder of Gatto Development Corporation (GDC), arrived in the United States from Genoa, Italy with a dollar in his pocket and a vision of opportunity in his mind.

No stranger to hard work, this former Italian navy serviceman took his first stateside job in a factory where he worked on an assembly line. Within a short period of time, Mr. Gatto became discouraged by the limitations of his employment. Now married and with a family to care for, he decided that it was time to do something. With a small savings in the bank, he invested in his very first business – The Rudy Gatto Painting Company. Over a decade later, this successful business grew to become a full service construction company, the very first iteration of GDC.

With a passion for entrepreneurship, Mr. Gatto continued to expand his business plans. During his time performing construction work on commercial properties for real estate developers, he became intrigued by development. At that time, a well located large parcel of land became available for purchase. Mr. Gatto lined up several business partners, and acquired the property. Plans for development followed, and in August 1979 the Southbury Shopping Plaza was opened for business.

Originally home to a Reed’s department store, Grand Union Supermarket, and a number of other retailers, the shopping center grew to become a local landmark. “One of the proudest moments of my career was when the Southbury Shopping Plaza was opened,” Mr. Gatto says, “It wasn’t easy work, but it’s been worth it.” That success inspired Mr. Gatto to pursue other commercial projects.

Today, headed by his son Christopher Gatto, Gatto Development Corporation continues to grow as a family run business.
